The word of God is a life-transforming investment I would advise any and everyone to invest in, for an effective word or Bible study, I would advise you read these tips on how to do a book Bible study.


Reading the 66 books of the Bible can be burdensome sometimes especially when you don’t take it one step at a time, what you will find yourself doing is that you will continually flip through all the passages of the Bible and at the end, nothing will be gained.

A book study of the Bible as the name implies means studying the Bible by books.

How do you go about studying the Bible by book? Should you just start from anywhere? Let’s take a look the guidelines to follow while studying the Bible by book

How to do a book Bible study


To do a book study of the Bible, there are steps or guidelines you should take so as to receive the best from your Bible study.

Find a quiet place

A quiet place is one of the best ways to carry out a Bible study as this environment is void of distractions and this aids quick assimilation.

Your quiet place can be a closet in your apartment or a river bank, or underneath a tree where you enjoy the cool breeze of the morning.

Your definition of quiet place might be that you will have to wake up early in the morning, it all depends on what suits your taste.

Get your notebook and writing materials

The main reason for the notebook and pad is for you to be able to write down keywords and key point gotten from your book study of the Bible.


Prayers is the most crucial process in your Bible study, you engage God via prayers.

Ensure you pray before, during and after your Bible study.

Choose what book you want to study

The Bible comprises of 66 books, which means you have 66 options to choose from, you can prayerfully choose one, most times I read my Bible based on the leading of the Holy spirit.

Start reading from the smallest books of the Bible so as not to get tired as you read, you can start from James or John

Skim through the book first

Skim through the book first, so as to be familiar with what the passage is talking about,

After doing this, you can then begin to take your reading slowly by verse, chapters and so on.

Try to figure out what type of book it is

In the process of your Book Bible study, series of question will pop up.

The books of the Bible has it’s own peculiar meaning, interpretation and authors.

The Proverbs is a book of wisdom, Isaiah is about prophecy and so on.

As you carry out your Bible study, you need to find out what type of book you are reading, is it a book where I can gain wisdom? or it’s a book on prophesy? You need to figure out what type of book it is in order to keep it in the right context.

Ask questions

After you must have figured out what type of book you are reading, you can begin to ask series of question like this

  • Who wrote these book?
  • Who was it written to?
  • What took place at the time the book was written?
  • What is it about the culture?
  • When was the book written?
  • Where was the book written?
  • Why was the book written?

Allow the Holy Spirit to interpret the scriptures

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

(Proverbs 3:5,6)

The book of the Bible was written by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, so as you study the word, you will need directory from him, you will need his help to unveil the hidden wisdom in the word, remember he is the spirit of truth, he guides into all truth, so lean on him to help you.

You can’t interpret scriptures yourself.

He has to help you.

Write down the inspiration you got from the Holy Spirit

As you do your book Bible study, begin to write down in your Bible study notebook all that the Holy Spirit ministered to you during the course of your word study.


Commit all that you have learnt to God in prayers, ask him to help you in every areas that the word ministered to you, thank him for the wisdom hidden in his word.

Hi it’s Brenda from Some great tips here. Do you ever try to do word study as the Holy Spirit leads while studying a book? Or verse mapping? I’m currently studying Proverbs – have been for a week now, but I’m only in chapter 3 because I’m taking my time and getting so much out of it.
