Meditation is one of the best ways to connect and receive the best from God.

Before I go into the details of what meditation entails I will love to share my little experience with you.

I never really got much from the study of the word until I began to meditate, well to be sincere, I never really understood the concept of meditation, what it really meant and what it takes.

Then a friend of mine introduced me to what meditation really entails few months ago, and I bet you, I have gotten a lot from there.

It has really been an awesome experience, I got interpretations and life changing mysteries from meditating on God’s word and I will love you to be a partaker of the mysteries of God, that’s why I wrote this post.

The word “meditate” is obtained from the Greek word “hagar” which means to;
To think, imagine and ponder
To mutter
To roar

To meditate means to ponder, to look deeper, to imagine, to think on a subject matter.  The main reason why people meditate is to receive insight and to also have a deeper understanding of a thing.

It is one of the best ways to search out the knowledge of a thing. Now that we have defined what it means to meditate, I will love to give the biblical definition of meditation

The biblical definition of meditation means to ponder, to imagine, to look into a scripture in order to get a deeper understanding and insight of that passage, verse or chapter. 

what does the Bible say about meditation?

Meditation could not have been over emphasized in the Scriptures.

Right from the time of Isaac in the Old Testament down to Paul in the New Testament, meditation is captured in the scriptures.

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” Joshua 1:8

‘Thou shalt meditate therein day and night’ this meditation is something that should be a part of our individual lives, the verse also established the benefit of meditating on Gods word, it says your ways will be prosperous and you shall have good success.

“I will remember the deeds of the LORD; Yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds” (Psalm 77:11-12)

“When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.” (Psalm 63:6)

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:8)

I will meditate on Your precepts, And contemplate Your ways.

What is the benefits of meditating on God’s word.

There are various benefit we gain when we meditate on God’s Word.

These are the processes that take place when we meditate;

  • Your mind is renewed. You are aligned with God’s word. Let us say you have sickness in your body and you think its God that gave you, however, when you begin to meditate on God’s word about healing, your mindset begins to change and you would see that it is God’s will to have you healed.
  • Your consciousness of God and his promises is awakened. Many are conscious of their weaknesses, failure poverty and challenges. This is what they meditate on always. But as you shift your gaze from your problems to the word of God, speaking it to yourself and roaring it, you begin to get conscious of the life the word of God gives. Sometimes, we begin to have feelings indicating the manifest presence of God.
  • Your experience begins to change. Suddenly, the sickness disappears; the lack is no more etc. the beauty of God is visibly seen by everyone around you as seen in this scripture

4 steps on how to Meditate on God’s Word

If you recall, there are three levels.
To think, imagine and ponder
This describes the process of thinking, picturing and focusing on the truth of God’s word.

Have you ever been under an exposition of God’s Word and you got the light of God’s Word?

After some time, you would discover that the whole rigor and energy you had dissipated and you are back to square one.

This is because the Word you received is a seed. Even with a fertile heart, the conditions necessary for growth and development is a constant renewal of our mind.

It should be noted that at any point in time, we are meditating (or at least thinking about something). These things that we think about most times are contrary to the will of God.

Hence, there is a need for a conscious decision to focus all our attention on God’s word so as to keep us from the wiles of the devil.

The following are the first steps in the practical ways to meditate on God’s word

1. Understanding God’s Word.
Get a proper understanding of the will of God. Listen to teachings, read commentaries, make a personal bible study time like this, etc.

2. Secondly, create a thought pattern around the central truth or scripture and begin to ponder upon it.

This is a very interesting part of meditation as pictures are formed in our minds surrounding this truth.
Throughout all these processes, you must keep all your focus on God’s word.

3. To mutter
This means to speak the word of God into life. Now, we confess the word of God. Continue speaking it till you are convinced. If you are not convinced, then do not stop! The words you are speaking are spirit and they are life.

4. To roar

At this point, your spirit man is already agitated. The presence of the Lord fills the environment. I feel goosebumps at most times. Praying in the spirit is advantageous in this stage. Your confessing becomes more intense i.e. your spirit, body, and soul are actively involved. The physical manifestation of God’s glory is imminent. Miracles, healings, signs, and wonders all happen at this point.

You are so conscious of the central truth you are meditating on that you literally begin to roar both in your understanding and in the Spirit.

Do not forget that the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
In these times of serious panic, it is expedient that we meditate on the word of God.

Remember his promises and daily meditate on his word.
Below is a pattern on how to meditate on the love of God

Christian meditation techniques

As a beginner you might be wondering how to meditate, I have provided steps on carrying out the Christian meditation techniques for you below

1. Find a place or time where you will not be disturbed

Finding a place and time is quite important for meditating on the word of God.

Meditation should be carried out in a silent and serene environment void of distractions.

2. Sit comfortably.

You can probably get a sit to rest your back on, ensure you sit comfortably so as not to feel discomfort during the course of the meditation.

3. Close your eyes.

The next thing to do after you are sitted comfortably is to ensure that your eyes are closed so as to focus and avoid distractions.

4. Imagine Jesus and be silent in his presence for a few minutes.

What do you do after your eyes are closed, shift your focus on Jesus, picture Jesus fitted on the throne.

5. Go ahead and thank him.
Thank him for his love that abounds forever.
6. Keep thinking about scriptures that talk about the love of God. (John 3:16, for instance). Continue to ponder on the scriptures that talk about the love of God
7. After a while, keep talking to yourself about how much He loves you. At this point, you might begin to feel the presence of God physically.

8. Now begin to roar with your understanding and in your spirit.
This whole process can take from ten to fifteen minutes to hours.

The more you try, the longer you can go.
Beloved, if you can try this technique on Christian meditation today, you will surely have testimonies to tell, I am not saying you won’t get distracted the very first, second, and third time you try this out, you will, but patience and consistent practice is key.

Practical ways to meditate on God’s word

I wrote extensively on the necessity of meditation and how it serves as a vehicle in bringing forth the reality of the word of God into your life, I also want you to understanding the concept of how to connect with God through meditation

Meditation can never be overemphasized as Meditation on Scripture is a basic tool for performance.

If you want to have a distinction in your exams meditate on the spirit of excellence in Daniel 6:3 if you want to move in the healing anointing meditate on the word of Jesus in Mark 16:13
But you might be wondering and pondering on questions like “I know meditation is good but how can I meditate?”.
That’s why I am here to guide you through practical ways  to meditate on God’s word.

“The labor of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city”.

Ecclesiastes 10:15

Meditation is not just a practice or a set of rules you can establish to suit yourself, meditation is a practice that has its own unique principles and if you don’t follow those set of principle you would end up in frustration and pain, you would feel like God is not a faithful God but the truth is God is always faithful.

Just like prayers, meditation has been a long time Christian practice, from the days of the Early Apostle even upon till now.

So like I said meditation has its unique principles and I would with joy in my heart share those principles with you.

PRINCIPLE ONE

Guarding your heart

Guarding your heart is one of the best practical ways to meditate on God’s word, I would be describing this principle with two verses

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life”

Proverbs 4:23

“Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another”.

Romans 2:15

Science has made us believe that we completely think with our brain but truth be told, it’s by the heart thoughts are made.

The heart I talk about here is not the biological heart that pumps and circulates blood through your body,

I am talking about your consciousness, which is the seat of your conscience, and according to the two scriptures above your heart is the place where all your decisions are deliberated upon and where all your actions flow from.

“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us”.

Romans 5:5

Guarding your heart simply means shielding it from the external forces of the devil.
According to the scripture the love of God is in your heart hence, what you are to do is to consistently ponder on God’s love for you, how much he loves you, and want the best for you.

In so doing you are building a barricade against the lies and hates of the devil and you are also building a platform for easy engagement of the practices of meditation.

PRINCIPLE TWO

Pick a Scripture

Another practical way to meditate on God’s word is to pick a scripture.
For example, you can pick 1 Peter 2:24 which speaks of the sin-bearing Messiah and the healing you received by his stripes.
meditating on this scripture can be a good way to start.
Note:  meditation is a practice you engage when you want the word of God to come alive in you.

PRINCIPLE THREE

Listen to Spiritual songs

“But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the Lord came upon him” 2 Kings 3:15

You see scientist have even proven the power of music and how it help in relaxation, hence playing a song prior to meditation and also during meditation is a one of the best practical ways to carry out meditation, please make sure they are spirit led song and not just songs that give you goosebumps.

I would love to recommend two powerful Nigerian base worshippers: Theophilus Sunday and Lawrence Oyor and I would also recommend Hillsong, Kim Walker, and Paul Wilbur.

PRINCIPLE FOUR

Turn off the light

“He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies”.

Psalms 18:11

This might sound a little bit spooky, but let me tell you the secret of turning off the light it helps you in focusing by limiting the distraction of the world around you.
Please don’t be afraid, you are a child of God, you are closer to him than anything else, even the scripture above agrees that God hides in darkness.

PRINCIPLE FIVE

The last principle in the practical ways to meditate on God’s word is to

Close your eyes and ruminate on the word of God

In Ruminating on the scripture, don’t try to interpret the scripture with your brain, just ponder on it without trying to interpret it, do this for a while and stop, then begin to visualize the above scripture with your imagination and the holy spirit will take it from there by bringing you understanding.

The holy spirit is your helper so allow him to do the heavy lifting, position yourself using these five principles and see how He would flood your heart with understanding which in turn changes every piece of your life.

This might be one of the most difficult steps in the practical ways to meditate on God’s word because as you close your eyes to ruminate, a lot of thought will start flooding your mind.

This is what you should do, Do not lose focus, keep your gaze focused on the word and it will work wonders in your life,
