There are principles and guidelines as regards carrying out a topical Bible study and I will be making a list about them below

Pray

Prayer is far the most important thing to do before and after your Bible study as it is a means if you expressing your thought to God and God communicating his will to you, to get more from your Bible study, I would advise that you pray before and after your word study.

Start with a clean, humble and pure heart

I personally think the reason why we study the word is not only to get rooted or knowledgeable, it is to encounter the life and wisdom hidden in God’s word.

When you want to read God’s word, the first thing you should do is to let go of your knowledge, which includes your culture, perspective, choices, and will. This is a way of asking the Holy Spirit to reveal the mysteries of his word to you, remember he guides into all truth, but he guides those who have surrendered their will to him.

Whenever you approach the concept of studying the Bible by topic, I would advise you to come with nothing and this includes all I have listed above.
Come with a clean heart and with the understanding that without his help you can do nothing.
In seeking God’s counsel about a topic, you need to start with a clean heart, the psalmist prayed a prayer in
Psalms 51:10 he said
“Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me’

Only God can shatter all your defenses, and to get more in your Bible study, you need his help.
