The SOAP Bible study method is another method of Bible study that not only allows you to study the Bible by verse, chapters and books, it also allows you to dive deeper into God’s word thus building intimacy with God and getting more from your word study.

Below is a break down of the SOAP method

How to use the SOAP Bible study method

Letter S in the SOAP Bible study method

S stands for Scripture
This Acronym is the simplest in the SOAP method as all you need do is to select what scripture you would be reading and then write it out in your Bible study notebook.
There are several ways to go about this

1. You can choose a scripture by topic and the Youversion Bible study online tool is an excellent tool that can help out in this pursuit.
All you need do is to download the Youversion App here, then type the topic of your choice into the search field, a list of scriptures will be displayed to you which is centered around the topic you have typed. I will explain how to go about this in the latter part of this post.

2. Another way of choosing the passage you want to read is by selecting a particular book of the scriptures, I would advise you start from the book of John as a beginner, I would also advise you start tackling it by Chapters, for Example John 1.

Letter O in the SOAP Bible study method

O stands for Observation
We all know that the word of God has life in it and for you to be able to discern that life, you need to meditate on God’s word.
This step in the SOAP method requires that you take out time to really meditate on the scripture of your choice.
Here are list of question to ask while carrying out observation on the scripture of your choice.
1. Who wrote this passage?
2. Who is the passage referring to?
3. What promise, principle, and command is for you?
4. Are there scriptures that can also add to your understanding of what’s being said?

Letter A in the SOAP Bible study method

Now the major reason why we study the word is to build our relationship with God and to also encounter the life attached to studying the word.
Hence if you accumulatr what you have meditated on without applying it , the whole meditation process is fruitless.
The Application step in the SOAP method is the most complex but also life transforming.
During the Application, you will have to incorporate the principles, wisdom, knowledge you have gained into your own life.
For example, if I read a portion of the Bible that talks about God’s command for us to love, I will not just go ahead to assume that God’s definition of love is the same as mine, I will go ahead to search out the characteristics of God’s love via my Youversion Bible app using the above listed method, after doing that I will ask God to teach me how to love, because based on the characteristics of love I found, I might not be able to love genuinely as God does.

Note: No man receives anything except it’s given him from above.
Loving your enemies isn’t fun? Is it? So how do you go about loving them as God instructs, it’s by asking him to help you love them and this leads to the last acronym on the SOAP method.

Letter P in the SOAP Bible study method

P stands for Prayer
I practice this and would also advise you to do so too, please always pray before you start reading the Bible, it’s not a tradition or something, it is you asking God to grant you the wisdom to access the hidden things in his word.
You should also pray after you have concluded your bible study
I am sure there are lots of lessons, principles, commandment, the word must have revealed to you, present them to God in prayers as only him can help reshape your life Into his own image.

Example of the SOAP Bible study method

Before concluding i will like to share an example of the SOAP Bible study method using Proverbs 3:6 which says

“Acknowledge him in all your ways and he shall direct your path”

Put down Proverbs 3:6 in your Bible study notebook. Looking for tips on how to create your own Bible study notebook click here

The author of this passage was king Solomon and as it stands the scripture speaks to me and every Christians.
The commandment here is for me to acknowledge (which means to submit, to recognize) God in all my ways and the end result is that God will guide me.

I have to apply the principle of acknowledging God in all that I do, for example somebody wronged me and refused to apologise, what am I suppose to do here? Because I acknowledge God in my ways, what I will do is to be at peace with such a person, I hope you understand, that sometimes it’s not easy to do this things, but his grace is available.

1. I will thank God for the wisdom hidden in his word.

2. I will commit all my ways to him and ask that he realigns me back to his will

3. I will ask for the grace to always acknowledge him in all of my ways

This process might take a long period of time but feel free to spend as much time as you want.

No amount of time spent with God is a waste.

The soap method is an effective method that helps you dig deeper into your Bible studies.

Please be reminded that the SOAP is an acronym that stands for scripture, observation, application and prayer.
Endeavour to study your Bible gradually from a verse to chapter, from chapters to books.

Interesting process. I usually let the Holy Spirit show me the O portion while I am going about living. Just all over a sudden, I will observe God’s Word in action and the Holy Spirit will remind of the scripture that I am seeing at work on my behalf. It is lovely and draws me closer to God and leaning and relying on Him.
